Parents should be the master teachers of their children. The
Church will assist parents in their teaching and training, but
only assist. The Church cannot be a substitute for parental
responsibility. Elder Richard L. Evans said the home "is also
the source of our personal lives, and in a sense the determiner
of our everlasting lives. And so our plea is for parents to take
the time it takes to draw near to the children God has given
them. Let there be love at home. Let there be tenderness and
teaching and caring for and not a shifting of responsibility
onto others. God grant that we may never be too busy to do the
things that matter most, for 'Home makes the man' " (Richard
Evans' Quote Book, Salt Lake City: Publishers Press, 1971, p.
21). Elder Ben Bank |
"Understanding who these children are and their potential in God's
kingdom can help us have a greater desire to meet the challenges more
patiently--- more lovingly. The Lord will help us teach our children if
we will do all that is within our power. Families are forever, and the
Savior wants us to succeed. As we seek the Spirit, we can receive the
comfort, guidance, and reassurance we need to fulfill the
responsibilities and receive the blessings of parenthood."

"I fear that
some members of the Lord’s Church “live far beneath our privileges” with
regard to the gift of the Holy Ghost. Some are distracted by the things
of the world that block out the influence of the Holy Ghost, preventing
them from recognizing spiritual promptings. This is a noisy and busy
world that we live in. Remember that being busy is not necessarily being
spiritual. If we are not careful, the things of this world can crowd out
the things of the Spirit. Some are spiritually deadened and past feeling
because of their choices to commit sin. Others simply hover in spiritual
complacency with no desire to rise above themselves and commune with the
Infinite. If they would open their hearts to the refining influence of
this unspeakable gift of the Holy Ghost, a glorious new spiritual
dimension would come to light. Their eyes would gaze upon a vista
scarcely imaginable. They could know for themselves things of the Spirit
that are choice, precious, and capable of enlarging the soul, expanding
the mind, and filling the heart with inexpressible joy."
Elder Joseph B.
Wirthlin |
"A
woman with a mother heart has a testimony of the restored
gospel, and she teaches the principles of the gospel without
equivocation. She is keeping sacred covenants made in holy
temples. Her talents and skills are shared unselfishly. She
gains as much education as her circumstances will allow,
improving her mind and spirit with the desire to teach what she
learns to
the generations who follow her."

"If
you have not chosen the kingdom of God first, it will, in the
end, make
no difference what you have chosen instead."

"We
too must have a faith to teach our children and bid them to keep
the commandments. We should not let their choices weaken our
faith. Our worthiness will not be measured according to their
righteousness. Lehi did
not loose the blessing of feasting at the tree of life because
Laman and Lemuel refused to partake of its fruit. Sometimes as
parents we feel we have failed when our children make mistakes
or stray. Parents are never failures when they do their best to
love, teach, pray, and care for their
children. Their faith, prayers, and efforts will be consecrated
to the good of their children."

"Moses counseled, 'And thou shalt teach [these words] diligently
unto they children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in
thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou
liest down, and when thou risest up.' Our families should
be in our thoughts continually."

"The world in which our students choose spiritual life or death
is changing rapidly. When their older brothers and sisters
return to visit the same schools and campuses they attended,
they find a radically different moral climate. The language in
the hallways and the locker rooms has coarsened. Clothing is
less modest. Pornography has moved into the open. Tolerance for
wickedness has not only increased, but much of what was called
wrong is no longer condemned at all and may, even by our
students, be admired. Parents and administrators have in many
cases bent to the pressures coming from a shifting world to
retreat from moral standards once widely accepted. The
spiritual strength sufficient for our youth to stand firm just a
few years ago will soon not be enough. Many of them are
remarkable in their spiritual maturity and in their faith. But
even the best of them are sorely tested. And the testing will
become more severe."
Henry B. Eyring |
"Along the way, at times when our children are away from us, the
Lord
provides inspired 'Miriams' to watch over them-special
third-party helpers
such as priesthood and auxiliary leaders, teachers, extended
family, and
worthy friends. Sometimes the Spirit prompts us as parents to
seek special
help beyond ourselves through such resources as doctors and
qualified
counselors. The Spirit will direct when and how such help
should be
obtained."
