Heigh Ho, Heigh Ho....I'm not sure what the State of Washington is looking for with a subject like this, but I can only assume that this is kind of like high-school "shop." I can take the words apart and come up with "occupation" (job, career, hobby) and "education" (to learn about). So I guess we learn about jobs. We do learn all about the different jobs this beautiful world has to offer us. I think it is a great way to show my children that we need to learn a lot before we choose our profession. Mentoring is a great place to start. If a child shows an interest in a given hobby or career, find a friend who maybe help the child find out what the career or hobby is like. When I was little I found out that a vet had to take science and had to do some pretty bloody things with animals. It turned me off from that profession. Not that I don't love animals...just the opposite. I couldn't stand to see the insides of a creature I loved and might loose. Just couldn't stomach it....that and all those science courses. Cub Scouts and especially Boy Scouts and all the great merit badges are great introductions into careers. Even if you don't have a "boy" scout, it might be well worth it to check out what they can learn and do. Stores that sell Occupational Education supplies. |
