Test Tubes, Microscopes, & Chemicals

I am not the science person in our house.  I hated dissecting and I don't understand half of what is in those text books, but I love to learn so this subject has been very fascinating to me.  (I just hope that I don't faint when we dissect a frog--again.)

We have been "cheating" on most of the science we have done---I've let my husband teach it.  My husband, who happens to have a 3 mile commute, comes home and teaches science during his "lunch time" once a week. We have invited another homeschooling family to join us for these lessons.  They have done electricity, earth science, the human body, crystals and I'm sure a few other things that I can't remember.

But my husband's life is just as busy as mine and he doesn't have extra time to spend preparing the lessons and whatnot for the class so we have relied on Delta Education to do it for us.  We have purchased quite a few of their Clusters and Nutshells kits and used those in teaching our children science.

I could actually teach science using these kits, and I don't know "science" very well.  The kits are designed for small groups ages 6-12.  The teacher's book is scripted, therefore I could teach it because I can read.  The kits include everything you would need to teach the lesson.  Yes, much of the stuff is a "household item" but the dollar savings in trips to the store and the time saving in not having to hunt for something are well worth the money. We have enjoyed learning about our the world around us through these kits.

Scouting and Science

One other great tool is the Boy Scout's Merit Badge program.  They have many great merit badges that can help teach science.  For the summer of 2003 we did a unit on Weather while helping a young Boy Scout earn his weather merit badge.

Unit Studies

Unit studies lend themselves well to science and I can teach these science topics.

Stores that sell science products.
