If I were starting all over again.....

I would trust myself more.  I found myself so worried if I had shortcomings, and spent way too much money trying out every highly praised item on the market I could afford, hoping it would somehow make up for my failures.  In retrospect I see that success in homeschooling takes nothing more than daily commitment founded on the firm conviction that you are doing this because you have somehow been "called" to it.  Then you choose the method or curriculum that inspires YOU, the "teacher," because your enthusiasm and belief in the feast you spread before your children, despite their occasional groans, will keep you rooted and moving forward.

I personally can't over schedule myself and the children outside the home, certainly not in the early hours of the day, or work doesn't get done (and no phone).  Still, there must be some diversion, but in balance.

Finally, a practical thing that helped keep our minds on school was a weekly chart that had breakfast and lunch planned (nothing fancy, and the same every week) so that we all knew what to expect without worrying what we would find to eat (it made us really sit down to meals together better at theses times and was a welcome social break with each other) .

Catherine Levison has written a wonderful book that addresses some of these issues in the midst of a book on Charlotte Mason's method....More Charlotte Mason Education, but the common sense would be worthwhile to anyone, no matter what approach you take to homeschooling.

All the best to you all as you are undoubtedly gearing up for your new school years!

Much love,

Heidi
