It's a Perfect Fit

Schooling and Scouting have so much in common.  The handbooks are a wealth of knowledge.  They don't have complete packaged curriculums but they have great starts.  As most will be starting their journey to an Eagle with a cub, we will start there.  We didn't do Tiger Scouts so I have no information about that program, so we will start with Bobcat.

Now most of the cubs in scouting could have more awards than they get if only mom and dad would become familiar with the requirements.  When your child writes a paper for school, there is probably an achievement, arrow point or requirement that can be signed off.  When you visit the zoo, there are tons of things that can be signed off.  Become familiar with the book and you have won half the battle.  I suggest you become familiar with it before you and your son start down the path to the next rank.

We set up one day of the week where we go through what they wanted to do for scouting the past week and sign it off and pick the next goal.  It is a great way to remind them of goals they have set, check progress on long term goals and pick your unit study for the next week or so. I call this my DO/DUE list.  They are to "do" by "due" date. I use a sticky note in their book and then copy it and tape the copy to cabinet or post on a bulletin board.

I have copied the back of each book (where you fill in their progress--the paw prints, arrow point or check lists) and put that up on the wall and we mark it off there.  I found this to be a reminder to the scout and also a great way of having back up when the handbook gets misplaced or lost.  I've had a handbook stay at a den leaders home while "lost" for a month.  I also keep a book for myself.  It looks very much like my scriptures, highlighted and dog eared.  Another great record keeping page can be found here.  I highly recommend you download (they are free) the year you are doing.  It is another great visual reminder to the scout and another great way of having back up.  We had a budding artist decide that all the arrow points needed to be colored in--and he got the wall as well.  Boy was I thankful for the triple bookkeeping I've been doing. Good luck!

CUB SCOUTS UPDATE:: I have tried to keep the web pages current but it seems like a never winning battle, so I have taken much of what I have had down and just refer you to the books.  I have in stead just put links up for the different categories that you will come across as you work your way through the program.

Here are some of our favorite Scouting web sites

bulletBoy Scouts of America - BSA - National Council  Official web page for the BSA forms
bulletBoy Scouts of America - Official Catalog  Great place to find items you and your scouter may need.  As of today (May 2002) they aren't able to take internet orders but you can phone them and they will send it out quickly.  We shop here for many specialty items that are hard to find at hobby shops or at the local scout shop.
bulletU.S. Scouting Service Project  This has so much information I don't know where to begin.  I've got specific link to it through out the different ranks.  It is such a great resource!  This is quite the service project to those of use wondering in the dark.  Book mark it and come back often.
bulletU.S. Scouting Service Project Merit Badge worksheets.  ESSENTIAL!!
bulletScoutmaster.org  and cubmaster.org from U.S. Service Project
bullet Merit Badge Dot Org & Merit Badge Dot Com ESSENTIAL!  The BSA has over 100 merit badges, and this web page covers all of them (don't quote me I haven't had enough time to check).  With that many topics you can just imagine all the knowledge contained in just the web page alone!
