Projects

As you watch the parade of nations color in the countries as the file in the stadium.  They do a closing ceremony parade of nations too. Make sure you have a map (blank works too) and an atlas near by.

Figure out how much it would cost your family to go to the Olympics, don't forget food.

Figure out the exchange rate if the Olympics are in a foreign country.

Figure out how much it costs to be an athlete.

Read the Olympic coverage in your local newspaper (or watch on a local news channel) and see if it is slanted.

Hold your own Olympics.  A few events might be shot put (wadded up newspaper or paper towel), javelin (drinking straws), bob sleigh luge or skeleton (pushing on skateboards), ice skating (socks on a wood floor), ski jumping, (jump from a height), long jump, sprints, long distance running, skating, biking, swimming, biathlon, pistol shooting (water guns), archery,   etc. Record your results and have an award ceremony. *Please use caution when doing the events*

Graphing and questions to ask

  •  Graph the Olympic athletes by countries.
Who has the most athletes and why?
How come the Southern Hemisphere doesn't have many athletes participating?
  •  Graph the medals and see what country comes out with the most medal
  •  Graph the medals and see what country comes out with  the most medal percentage.
    Why?
  •  Graph what medals your home country takes home.
What are your countries strengths and weaknesses and why?
