Overview

The Cub Scout Academics and Sports Program is very family involved and easy to put into a homeschooling program.  You will want to purchase the book (#34299) from your local scout office.  It isn't all the expensive and the amount of information you can get from it is worth the price.  May I also suggest you read the book in its entirety and become very familiar with the different belt loops and pin requirements.

Many packs (I'm talking LDS packs) do not implement this program in their dens/packs but that shouldn't prohibit you from doing them on your own or volunteering to start the program in your den or pack.  You don't have to have the den/pack doing these to work or receive the awards.  Go for it and have fun!

Please read the introduction in the book.  I do not include it here, so read it and become familiar with how the program works.  And while you are at it you might as well read all the way to page 26.  Also note that I have just briefly described the requirements for each belt loop and/or pin.  Please see the book for more detailed information.  Also read the back page of each belt loop or pin.  They have included a bunch of information for the cub to complete the requirements.  There are books, web pages and sometimes even the rules!  Super resource.

UPDATE--The programs have changed a bit and I haven't had time to review and update this site.  So please see this site for the changes.

10 Attend a community event or landmark

This isn't a hard one, but does take some planning.  For some of the interview you will need to help the cub set up appointments.  I will tell you to first look in your ward.  Our ward has a naturalized citizen, mayor and many lawyers.  If we were to look at our stake...the possibilities are endless and they are usually very open to having a young man (or woman) come visit for an interview.  The interviewing skills are worthy to acquire, both the giving and being in one.

Having a husband who programs computers for a major software company, this was almost too easy.  I just turned it over to him and with in two weeks (because of #9) the cubs have their belt loop and pin.

Again a note of caution about being on the web.  Please do not take it lightly and think..."Oh, he SEEMS like a nice guy.  Talking via email will be safe."  We are very particular about who, where and what our kids have access to on the web.  As much as I would like our family to be anonymous out there, we aren't and can never undo what was and is out there.  Both of us are known on the web, and as an extension so our our children.  Please don't let your child(ren) end up on the evening news or on the front page or your local paper.  Protect them and teach themselves to protect themselves and their family.  It isn't too young to start telling them this, especially while they think everyone is a good guy.  As my four year old said, "Bad guys are only in movies."  (I'll step down off my soapbox now.)
