Bobcat

The Bobcat trail is the cub's introduction to scouting.  This rank has to be earned before any other rank can be earned.  It is a very simple and easy to do badge.  The cub learns the Cub Scout Promise, Law of the Pack, meaning of Webelos, the Cub Scout sign, handshake, motto, salute and talks with his parents about Child Protection.

If your child is eight years old it is time to talk very frank with him about being safe.  Each Cub Scout handbook has a pamphlet in the front that go over in detail what abuse is and what do to about it.  We have the child read it with dad in a PPI (Personal Priesthood Interview).  It is a non threatening interview where frank discussion can be had.  Also check out the web site, Youth Protection in Scouting for more information and ideas.

There are a few other things that the cub learns while earning his bobcat, but it can be earned in a weeks time.  I say a week that way you can quiz the boy on the "memorization" of the law, promise, handshake, motto and salute.
